Roasted Cabbage Steaks are really easy to make, and they make a delicious addition to any dinner. Serve them as a main course or side dish. They’re terrific for St. Patrick’s Day! This easy baked recipe is vegan and gluten-free.
Cabbage Steaks
I don’t know about you, but I like to make “steaks” out of vegetables. They’re a fun way to serve vegetables, and they look fancy on a plate. The trend probably started with meaty portobellos, and then it moved on to other veggies like cauliflower and squash. Since it’s easy to slice, cabbage is another fun veggie to turn into steaks.
Health Benefits of Cabbage
I really love cabbage, because it’s one of those veggies that’s great either raw or cooked. I like to add it to salads, but it’s also great cooked in casseroles or stews. It’s really nutritious, too. Some of the health benefits of cabbage include:
- It’s a cruciferous vegetable that contains many antioxidants, which are known to reduce inflammation.
- Cabbage is packed with vitamin C, which may protect the body from damage caused by free radicals.
- The fiber found in cabbage can help to improve your digestion.
- The potassium that’s found in cabbage may help to lower blood pressure.
- Cabbage’s soluble fiber and plant sterols may aid in lowering LDL cholesterol.
- It’s high in vitamin K, which is essential for blood clotting.
Cutting Your Cabbage into Steaks
- When cutting your cabbage, you first want to remove any outer leaves that may be loose or damaged.
- You then want to trim the stem slightly, but don’t remove the whole thing.
- Then place the cabbage on a cutting board and use a sharp knife to cut it into thin slabs, about ½-inch thick. It’s okay if there are a few loose bits of leaf here and there.
How to Make Roasted Cabbage Steaks
It couldn’t be easier to make cabbage steaks!
- Once you’ve sliced your cabbage, you brush both sides with oil and sprinkle them with salt and pepper.
- Then you bake them for about 40 minutes, carefully flipping them at the halfway point.
- Once their done you drizzle them with Roasted Garlic Cream and sprinkle them Tempeh Bacon. And serve!
I like to serve my cabbage with Roasted Garlic Cream, but you can use just about any sauce that you like. They’re great with tahini, too. I sprinkle them with my homemade Tempeh Bacon, but you can use store-bought tempeh bacon, if you’re in a hurry. If you follow a gluten-free diet, check the ingredients on the tempeh bacon package, because some do contain a small amount of wheat.
Cabbage steaks look really nice on the dinner plate. You can serve them as a main course, along with roasted vegetables, or you can serve them as a side, along with baked tofu and mashed potatoes.
