Chocolate Hummus

I first tasted chocolate dessert hummus at a green-themed festival in New York City about 5 years ago. I was a little skeptical, but I’m willing to give pretty much anything vegan a try. It was amazing! I looked for it locally, and even thought I did find other dips from the brand at the grocery store, I wasn’t able to get the chocolate one. And then I kind of forgot about it, which is a little out of character for me. If you’ve been following this blog for a while, you’ll know that I’m a hopeless chocoholic

When I came across it in the store, I was suddenly reminded of that sweet dessert dip I had tried a few years earlier, and I grabbed a tub. I went thought it pretty quickly, using it as a dip for my afternoon snack of apple slices.

Trader Joe’s Copycat Recipe

Trader Joe’s has a tendency to discontinue foods I love, so I try to recreate them at home while they’re still fresh in memory. (I still miss you, Grilled Eggplant Wraps!) Recreating this dip was pretty easy to do, since it’s made with chickpeas, tahini, cocoa, and a sweetener.

How to make Vegan Chocolate Hummus

This recipe is super simple to make! You just throw all of the ingredients together in a food processor and process until it’s smooth and creamy. If it looks a little lumpy or gritty, it’s totally fine – it’ll still taste great.

Store your hummus in an air-tight container in the fridge for up a week – if it lasts that long!

Hummus in food processor

I like to make my chocolate hummus with tahini. Tahini is used in savory hummus, and  I love the combination of chocolate and tahini. (Truffles, anyone?) If you’re allergic to sesame seeds, or if you want to play with the flavor a little, you can try sunflower seed butter or a nut butter.

Valentine’s Day

Chocolate hummus is the perfect treat for Valentine’s Day. Serve it as a dessert with apple slices, fresh berries, and dried fruit. But don’t want until Valentine’s Day to make it! I love the combination of sweet and salty, so I love dipping pretzel chips as an afternoon snack. It’s a great appetizer for parties, too!

This recipe makes about 2 cups of hummus. A serving size is 2 tablespoons.

  • 1 15- ounce can chickpeas (drained and rinsed)
  • ¼ cup tahini
  • 1/3 cup maple syrup
  • ¼ cup cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons nondairy milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  1. Mix all of the ingredients together in food processor until smooth and creamy. If the mixture seems too thick, add more nondairy milk, a tablespoon at a time.
  2. Store in an air-tight container in the fridge for up to a week.
